Will the new European Commissioner for Transport be a life-saver?

  • September 19, 2024

Apostolos Tzitzikostas is the European Commissioner-designate for Transport, taking over from Adina Vălean who has been elected to the European Parliament and will take up a position on the committee on the internal market and consumer protection (IMCO).

Mr Tzitzikostas is a Greek politician, a member of Greece’s ruling conservative New Democracy party, affiliated with the European People’s Party (EPP). Greek MEP Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi, also in the EPP, is the new chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism.

The commissioner-designate’s appointment is subject to the outcome of confirmation hearings in the European Parliament, which will take place later in the autumn.

ETSC congratulated Mr Tzitzikostas for his nomination via the social media network X, and asked him to make a personal commitment to reaching the EU goal of cutting road deaths and injuries by half by 2030 by joining the newly-launched #IWillBeALifeSaver campaign.  Launched in September, the campaign has already signed up MEPs from the transport and internal market committees, as well as transport ministers from Ireland, Latvia and Lithuania and the European Commission’s coordinator for road safety.
