28 April 2016 – iSafer Conference, Dublin
The Road Safety Authority (RSA), in partnership with the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), hosted the iSafer Conference at Dublin Castle on Thursday 28 April 2016.
The event aimed to broaden knowledge and awareness of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) as a tool to combat speeding. The objective of the ETSC iSafer campaign is to contribute to reducing speed-related road deaths and injuries through the identification and promotion of best practice. The project includes a special focus on ISA and promoting its use at European and national level.
The conference was chaired by Director of Consumer Affairs for AA Ireland, Mr Conor Faughnan; RSA Chairperson, Ms Liz O’Donnell, and RSA Chief Executive, Ms Moyagh Murdock also addressed delegates on the day.
The conference featured presentations on the benefits of ISA, the technology behind it and road towards the implementation of ISA in Ireland. Among the speakers were: Prof Oliver Carsten, Institute of Transport Studies, University of Leeds; Dr Conor Deasy, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital; Mr John McCarthy, Department of Transport Tourism & Sport; Superintendent Con O’ Donohue, An Garda Síochána and Mr David Carty, Federation Internationale De L’Automobile (FIA). The RSA also shared a recorded message from Mr Jean Todt, Special Envoy for Road Safety for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) at the conference.

The event was part of the iSafer campaign which aims to contribute to reducing speed-related road deaths and injuries through the identification and promotion of best practice. The campaign includes seminars aiming to raise awareness of the risks of speeding and exploring the best strategies for the introduction of Intelligent Speed Assistance systems. The project receives financial support from Fundación MAPFRE, the Flemish Government and 3M.
