The Spanish Director General of Traffic has announced new measures targeted at reducing drink driving. The plans, announced following a meeting of the government’s road safety committee in May, include cutting the drink drive limit for professional and novice drivers to zero and suspending the driving licenses of anyone caught drink driving twice in two years. Traffic victims groups said the measures do not go far enough, and that drivers ‘don’t care’ if they lose their driving license. They recommend confiscating vehicles from repeat […]
The Netherlands may soon allow testing of autonomous vehicles without a driver on board and the Spanish government is working on a strategic plan for driverless and connected vehicles. Autonomous car tests have been possible in the Netherlands since 2015, though a driver was required to be in the driving seat at all times. The new proposal from transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen is for cars to operate with a “remote driver”. Companies will have to apply for a special license which will […]
Spain has installed 225 new safety cameras this month that can detect whether or not drivers are wearing a seat belt. The cameras are being installed at high-risk sites and areas with high traffic concentration. For the first two months after the launch, drivers pictured without a seat belt will be sent a warning letter. After that, fines of EUR 200 will be issued along with the loss of three driving license points. According to official figures for 2015, 22% of deaths on inter-urban […]
A report by the Spanish Foundation for Help Against Drug Addiction (FAD) and the Mapfre Foundation has concluded that in the previous six months nearly 64% of people aged between 16 and 30 had travelled in a car driven by someone who had drunk “substantial” alcohol. 32% said the same with regard to travelling with drivers who had consumed marijuana. The study concludes that the highest risk group of youngsters is male with more than five years of driving experience. However, Maria Segui, head […]
Dirección General de Tráfico DGT, C/Josefa Valcárcel, 44, Madrid 10.30 – 14.30 Online registration For years, speed has been recognised as one of the three main contributing factors to deaths and injuries on our roads. And for more than a decade, ETSC has been advocating the benefits of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) , a driver assistance system that a 2014 Norwegian study found to be the ‘most effective’ in saving lives. 2016 could prove to be a turning point in wide adoption of the technology. ISA uses a speed sign-recognition […]
30 km/h zones are continuing to spread across Europe with developments in recent months in Belgium, Spain and the UK – but implementation is sometimes hampered by bureaucracy. The Spanish city of Valencia introduced a 30 km/h zone across the entire historic centre district in September. The decision is designed to improve safety, reduce pollution, encourage shoppers to visit the area on foot and discourage transit traffic from crossing the city through the centre. The eventual aim is to limit all traffic to authorised […]
Deaths on Spanish roads declined by just 3 in 2014, with 1131 deaths compared to 1134 in 2013. The government pointed to several explanations for the slow-down in progress including a rise in distracted driving with more people using applications such as Whatsapp at the wheel. An ageing fleet, linked to Spain’s ongoing economic woes, was also blamed. Jesus Monclús, director of ETSC member Fundación Mapfre told the El País newspaper that some measures “lose effectiveness over time” such as the penalty points system introduced […]
Milan is the latest European city to announce plans to introduce 30 km/h zones. The new limits will start to be introduced by March according to an announcement last month. The city’s move reflects growing acceptance of the lower urban speed limits in cities and countries across Europe. The changes follow a decision by the city council of Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, to extend 20 mph (32 km/h) zones to cover some 80% of the city’s streets, including the entire city centre. Paris also […]
Spain’s highest government advisory body, the Council of State, has asked the Spanish government to reconsider plans to increase the speed limit on some parts of the motorway network to 130 km/h, saying that it could lead to a higher rate of collisions. The Council also criticised the proposal for failing to take into account the cost of changing speed limit signs, and said the move would lead to a decrease in risk awareness among drivers. The Spanish association of road accident victims also […]
