Germany, UK and France report increases in road deaths

Partial data for this year show increases in the numbers of road deaths in the EU’s three most populous countries raising fears that 2014 could mark an end to more than ten years of progress in improving road safety in the EU. Slovenia sets 2022 road safety target

Slovenia aims to cut road mortality to 35 deaths per million inhabitants by 2022, according to the government’s recently published road safety programme for the period 2013-2022.  According to ETSC’s latest PIN report, there were 61 road deaths per million inhabitants in Slovenia last year, higher than the EU average of 51. Increase in German motorway deaths

Increase in German motorway deaths

Deaths on motorways increased by 10.6% last year in Germany while the overall figure went down, according to new figures. ETSC’s German member DVR said in response that deaths are 25% higher on stretches of Germany motorways that have no speed limit compared to those with limits. UK road safety progress ‘lamentable’

ETSC’s UK member, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), has said the UK’s recent progress on road safety is ‘lamentable’ and the Government is failing to ensure Britain remains a world leader on the issue. Around 240,000 car occupants were killed in road collisions in the EU in the years 2001-2012. There were 12,345 deaths in 2012 compared with 27,700 in 2001 (1), a cut of 55%. Deaths of car occupants were cut by more than the overall death rate (49%) and substantially more than the rate for other road users (41%). This ETSC review provides an overview of transport safety performance indicators at the European level. Traditionally, transport safety work has been based on crash data. However, transport crashes are relatively rare events. There is a need to establish and specify safety performance indicators, which are causally related to crash frequency and severity.
