Seven in ten young Norwegian children now travel rear-facing

  • October 1, 2026

Seventy per cent of Norwegian children aged one to three now travel in a rear-facing car seat, up from 65% two years ago and just 20% in 2010, according to new figures from ETSC member Trygg Trafikk.

The survey, based on police checks of 1,595 children, found almost all one-year-olds (96%) facing backwards, but only 45% of three-year-olds.

Trygg Trafikk recommends rear-facing seats until at least the age of four. ETSC has made the same call, urging in its 2022 report on child road deaths that rear-facing seats be made mandatory for as long as practicable, preferably until four. That report found almost half of children killed on EU roads were travelling in cars.
