Environmental and road safety groups announce the safest and greenest German federal states

Baden-Württemberg, Thüringen and Rheinland-Pfalz are the leaders in sustainable mobility among the federal states of Germany, according to an analysis carried out for the German pro-rail alliance, Friends of the Earth and DVR – ETSC’s German member.  The “Federal State Index – Mobility & Environment 2018/19” looked at official statistics and the direction of transport policies in all 16 German federal states.

In efforts by states to reduce the number of dead and seriously injured in road traffic, DVR gave a mixed assessment. “In Germany, the death toll is below the level of 2012,” said the Chief Executive of DVR, Christian Kellner. “But if we want to reduce the number of deaths across Germany by 40 percent by 2020, we cannot be content with these state-by-state results. Especially since the number of severely injured people is stagnating at a high level and is higher today than in 2012 and 2013.” Nevertheless, Kellner praised the fact that many federal states had set their own safety targets and integrated a Vision Zero target for regional road safety work. Particularly noteworthy was the development of Baden-Württemberg and Berlin, who are currently ranked second and third in traffic safety behind the front runner Hessen. Only two years ago they were ranked in the middle of the table. “Both states are very committed to road safety. This can be used by others as an example,” said Kellner.
