ETSC road safety education project awarded European prize
ETSC’s LEARN! Project, which aims to improve the quality and provision of road safety education across the EU, has been awarded with one of this year’s European Commission ‘Excellence in Road Safety’ Awards.
Other winners included ETSC’s Austrian member KFV, for the implementation of new road markings that reduce risks for motorcyclists by guiding them on a safe centre line through bends, reducing loss-of-control incidents where riders swerve suddenly to avoid oncoming vehicles.
In the urban category, the city of Bologna won the award for ‘Città 30’ its wide-ranging strategy to reduce urban road deaths and injuries through lower speed limits and infrastructure changes. Earlier this month, a legal challenge to the programme, brought by taxi drivers, was thrown out by a regional court. The judges concluded that the taxi drivers had failed to prove economic harm, or a restriction on their right of freedom of movement.
