Greek campaign targets tourists

  • July 30, 2014

A large-scale public awareness campaign was launched this Summer in Greece by ETSC member the Road Safety Institute ‘Panos Mylonas’ targeting holidaying foreigners and locals. Greece has a relatively poor road-safety record with a notable spike in deaths and serious injuries over the high summer season: 211 people died and 280 were seriously injured on the roads in just two months between 20 June and 27 August 2013 according to police data. The campaign, in Greek and English, ran on tv, radio, outdoor media and on screens in Athens International Airport backed up by some 500,000 leaflets distributed across the country.

The Cross-Border Enforcement directive (see story), currently under discussion by the EU institutions, should help countries to better ensure that drivers from abroad obey local laws.
