80% of Germans support a total ban on drinking before driving
A clear majority of German citizens are in favour of a total ban on alcohol at the wheel. In a representative survey of 1,000 people aged 16 and over for the latest TÜV Mobility report, four out of five German citizens were in favour of a general ban on alcohol.
“Alcohol massively impairs the coordination, reaction and decision-making abilities of drivers,” said Marc-Philipp Waschke, Road Safety Officer at the TÜV Association, an ETSC member. “Whether driving a car, motorbike or any other vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol increases the risk of collisions and is, in particular, a contributor to collisions with serious consequences and deaths.”
The TÜV Association says the legal consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol in Germany are too mild. The organisation is calling for the use of medical/psychological examinations of those caught drink-driving to be extended to cases with a lower Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) than currently.
