SMART Sober Mobility Across Road Transport

Promoting best practice in cutting drink driving

smart_forwebsite

The objective of the SMART project is to address the main issues related to alcohol and driving and continue ETSC advocacy activities both at EU and Member State level to tackle drink driving and reduce the number of alcohol-related deaths. This focus is aligned with the EU’s own strategy to reduce injuries and deaths caused by drink driving.

The activities within SMART are consistent with and supplement ETSC’s systemic and evidence-based approach to road safety work.

In the framework of the SMART project for the year 2026, ETSC will conduct the following activities:

  • An annual report on country-by-country progress in reducing road deaths attributed to drink-driving over the past decade as well as number of alcohol checks carried out by the police in each European country collecting these data;
  • One EU-level event in Brussels in autumn 2026 to launch the new SMART Progress Report and bring together decision makers from the EU and national level as well as road safety associations, researchers and NGOs with a clear focus on policy measures that have a direct impact on cutting road deaths and serious injuries caused by alcohol.

The SMART project receives financial support from The Brewers of Europe.
