Memorandum to the Austrian Presidency of the EU

  • July 9, 2018

In this briefing, ETSC outlines its recommendations on the key EU road safety policy dossiers to be steered by the Austrian Presidency of the European Council in the second half of 2018.

The EU published four road safety measures on 17 May as part of its so-called third mobility package. They include an overall outline of the road safety strategy for the decade to 2030; new vehicle safety standards; updated rules on road infrastructure safety management and a strategy for automated driving

The Austrian Presidency should take up the initiative to promote the safety benefits of these key road safety measures and  promote their uptake in the EU without delay

The briefing also stresses the importance of looking to the future and ensuring that Europe is prepared for the growth in automated driving technologies and the arrival of autonomous vehicles. This will help to ensure the European Union can maintain its role as a major global automotive market and leader on road safety.

The briefing also examines progress towards the 2020 target with recommendations for maximising the results of road safety work and reversing the slowdown in the reduction in road deaths and serious injuries on Europe’s roads.
