Belgian insurer adopts zero tolerance policy for drink-drivers

  • September 14, 2024

Baloise Insurance has announced that it will now terminate the contracts of any driver involved in a road collision while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Any policyholder who is found to be under the influence during a collision will have their insurance policy revoked, regardless of whether it is their first offence or if they were only slightly over the legal limit. This policy also applies to new clients who have previously had crashes while intoxicated.

Most insurers in Belgium currently only cancel a driver’s policy after multiple incidents. Baloise’s new policy is a departure from this norm, reflecting a more stringent approach to road safety.

The move by Baloise could set a precedent, potentially influencing other insurers to adopt similar measures in the future.
