Swiss seat belt wearing rates not improving

The latest survey by ETSC’s Swiss member bfu has found that seat belt wearing rates in Switzerland decreased slightly last year and that only three-quarters of rear seat passengers are belting up. 93% of drivers comply with the requirement to wear a seat belt, compared to 94% last year according to the survey. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems on current model passenger cars reduce rear-end collisions by 38 percent according to new research based on real-world data. Autonomous Emergency Braking is becoming increasingly common on modern passenger cars. A new campaign video from Romania urges pedestrians to find a safe place to cross the road. Prior to making the film, an opinion survey was carried out asking people why they chose to cross at dangerous locations. The excuses given such as ‘I’m in a hurry’ and ‘I’m impatient’ are shown painted on the road instead of zebra crossings. London buses get second ISA trial

47 London buses covering two routes will be fitted with ISA technology as part of the second major trial of the system in the UK capital. More than 1,800 people have been killed or badly hurt by London buses over a five-year period. The move has been welcomed by pedestrian campaigners. Poland seventh EU country to require interlocks for convicted drink drivers

Poland is the latest European country to require convicted drink driving offenders to install an alcohol interlock if they wish to get back behind the wheel. The country joins Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, The Netherlands and Sweden, all of which now have rehabilitation programmes with interlocks backed by the courts. Pressure to cut BAC limits in England and Wales as France toughens limit for young drivers

England and Wales are under pressure to match Scotland’s successful move last year from a 0.8g/l general blood alcohol limit for drivers to 0.5. Meanwhile the French government will officially lower the limit for novice drivers from 0.5 to 0.2 from 1 July. The first four years of an alcohol-interlock linked rehabilitation programme for drink driving offenders in the US state of Michigan has been a ‘significant success’, according to a new study. The report showed that interlock programme participants have the lowest recidivism rates for operating under the influence of alcohol one, two and three years after the initial conviction for a repeat drink driving charge in comparison to the offenders who didn’t have to fit an interlock. US study shows economic benefits of cutting drink driving deaths

A new analysis published in the medical journal Injury Prevention shows the very significant benefits of preventing drink driving collisions on a national economy. Using an economic model developed by Rutgers University, the authors found that reductions in alcohol-involved crashes since the middle of the 1980s increased economic output in 2010 by an estimated $20 billion, raised GDP by $10 billion, increased US income by $6.5 billion, and created 215 000 jobs. In 2010, the European Union renewed its commitment to improving road safety by setting a target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2020, compared to 2010 levels.
