European Parliament demands higher safety standards for new cars, vans and lorries

The European Parliament says all new cars sold in Europe should be fitted as standard with a range of life-saving technologies including automated emergency braking, intelligent speed assistance and seatbelt reminders in all seats. Safety campaigners say the technologies could be as important as the seat belt, but action is needed now because it will take years before the majority of cars on the roads have the technology. Some 26,000 people died on EU roads last year, a figure that has hardly changed in […]

MEPs call for new car safety tech to be fitted as standard

The European Parliament’s Transport Committee has called for new cars to be fitted as standard with a range of life-saving technologies including automated emergency braking, intelligent speed assistance and intelligent seatbelt reminders in all seats. In a non-binding resolution responding to a report by the European Commission, “Saving Lives: Boosting Car Safety in the EU”, adopted today in Brussels, the committee said “more effective measures” are needed, in order to reach a goal of “no fatalities”. Mandatory safety standards for new cars sold on the European […]

Position Paper: Revision of the General Safety Regulation

Position Paper: Revision of the General Safety Regulation

26,300 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2015 compared to 25,970 in 2014, representing an increase of 1% and the second consecutive poor year for road safety. In 2014, more than 135,000 people were recorded as seriously injured. However, the long term safety trend has been positive, especially so for car occupants who have benefited more than other road users from road safety measures adopted over the past decade. The figures of the past years would have been significantly higher had it […]

New Spanish safety cameras to detect seat belt use

New Spanish safety cameras to detect seat belt use

Spain has installed 225 new safety cameras this month that can detect whether or not drivers are wearing a seat belt. The cameras are being installed at high-risk sites and areas with high traffic concentration. For the first two months after the launch, drivers pictured without a seat belt will be sent a warning letter. After that, fines of EUR 200 will be issued along with the loss of three driving license points. According to official figures for 2015, 22% of deaths on inter-urban […]

Commission outlines plans for safer cars, vans and lorries

Commission outlines plans for safer cars, vans and lorries

The European Commission has published a list of 19 lifesaving safety technologies that could be made mandatory on new vehicles in the next update of EU vehicle safety rules expected next year.  The European Transport Safety Council welcomes the announcement but says several critical areas for action are missing, and the proposed timescale is far too long considering that most of the technologies are already available today. 26,000 people die on European Union roads annually, with at least 135,000 suffering life-changing injuries.  Progress on […]

Experts underline importance of Seat Belt Reminder systems in new video

A new film from ETSC calls on the European Commission to require the fitting of Seat Belt Reminder Systems in all passenger seats in new cars when it reviews vehicle safety regulations later this year. The short video highlights the critical importance of seat belt wearing to prevent serious injury and death and cites research showing that up to a quarter of rear seat passengers are still failing to belt up. Seat Belt Reminder systems are already required on drivers’ seats thanks to the […]

13 October 2015 – Fitting Safety as Standard

13 October 2015 – Fitting Safety as Standard

Seatbelt reminders and EU vehicle safety legislation 08:00 – 09:00, Breakfast debate, Members’ Salon, European Parliament, Brussels This event was kindly hosted by Dieter-Lebrecht Koch MEP. 500 people die on EU roads every week and road collisions remain the single biggest non-health-related cause of death in Europe. But many of these tragedies could be prevented through the standard-fitting of innovative safety technologies being designed and developed in Europe such as audio-visual Seat Belt Reminder systems. Already required for driver seats on new cars, simply adding […]

Swiss seat belt wearing rates not improving

Swiss seat belt wearing rates not improving

The latest survey by ETSC’s Swiss member bfu has found that seat belt wearing rates in Switzerland decreased slightly last year and that only three-quarters of rear seat passengers are belting up. 93% of drivers comply with the requirement to wear a seat belt, compared to 94% last year according to the survey. But only 76% of rear seat passengers belt up, compared to 77% last year – a figure the organisation finds to be ‘inadequate, and rather surprising because the protective effect of […]

New survey reveals many Europeans still don’t take seatbelt laws seriously

New survey reveals many Europeans still don’t take seatbelt laws seriously

A new survey on seat belt use in Europe has revealed large numbers are still failing to belt up, despite the risks. The pan-European survey,  sponsored by Ford and published earlier this month, found that 1 in 3 admit to not wearing a seat belt in rear seats. One in four drivers also said they did not insist on rear seat passengers belting up. The survey of people in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, and the UK also showed that those in Romania […]

Commission report gives ‘green lights’ for mandatory fitting of new safety tech

Commission report gives ‘green lights’ for mandatory fitting of new safety tech

A major new study for the European Commission has identified a range of new vehicle safety technologies that are suitable for mandatory fitting as part of a review of EU vehicle safety legislation.  The report, carried out by consultants TRL, names technologies including Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) and seat belt reminder systems in passenger seats as ‘feasible in terms of the technology required’, already available on the market and offering a positive benefit-cost ratio. Plans already agreed by the EU […]

New vehicle technologies and extension of EU infrastructure safety rules could prevent thousands of collisions on motorways

New vehicle technologies and extension of EU infrastructure safety rules could prevent thousands of collisions on motorways

New safety technologies could play a major role in bringing the numbers killed on European motorways down, according to the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), authors of a new report published today. The new analysis of developments in motorway safety shows that, despite recent progress, around 1900 were killed on motorways in the EU in 2013. The report cites figures from several countries showing that up to 60% of those killed in motorway collisions were not wearing a seatbelt. The authors call on the […]

Ranking EU Progress on Improving Motorway Safety (PIN Flash 28)

Ranking EU Progress on Improving Motorway Safety (PIN Flash 28)

Motorways are the safest roads by design and regulation. Nevertheless in 2013, around 1,900 people were killed on the motorway network in the EU, representing 7% of all road deaths. Nearly 27,500 people have died on motorways in the EU in the last ten years 2004 to 2013. Nevertheless progress has been made. Across the EU the number of people killed on motorways was cut by 49% between 2004 and 2013 (compared to 44% on the rest of the road network). Over the same […]

Opinion: An opportunity for the EU to show it can have a positive impact on all our lives

Opinion: An opportunity for the EU to show it can have a positive impact on all our lives

by Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director Amidst the screaming headlines surrounding the possibility of an outbreak of Ebola in Europe over the last few weeks, I can’t help but question our society’s perception of risk. Less than a handful of people have died from Ebola in Europe and those that tragically have were all medical staff in direct contact with sufferers. The WHO maintains that a major outbreak in Western Europe is ‘unlikely’. But every week in Europe, on average, 500 people die on our […]

Seat Belt Reminders

Seat Belt Reminders

Implementing advanced safety technology in Europe’s cars This ETSC Policy Paper on “Seat Belt Reminders – Implementing advanced safety technology in Europe’s cars” brings together evidence on how the development and introduction of seat belt reminders can contribute to saving lives in Europe. It aims to promote this innovative enforcement solution among manufacturers and policy makers, showing that it helps to maximise casualty reduction. The Policy Paper shows that the level of seat belt use varies considerably among EU countries, despite the fact that […]
